I naturally have a low metabolism, as does the rest of my family, and now that I have an office job, I don’t have the time I used to have to exercise. Unfortunately, it’s also starting to show. What is the safest, most effective way to boost my metabolism?

If losing weight seems to have become a lost cause for you because you find yourself bouncing from fad diet to the newest fat burning pill then it’s time you learn how to increase your metabolism with these seven easy to do lifestyle changes. If you can simply speed up your metabolism your body will consume more calories and before you know it those extra pounds will begin to disappear. And once those pounds are gone they will stay off because an increased metabolic rate will keep burning any extra fat before your body can store it away.

There are no secrets to these seven steps. They are easy to accomplish if you are motivated to lose that extra weight and take back control of your body.

1. Get More Sleep – There are two reasons for this. The first is that many studies have shown that people who get 8 hours or more of sleep per night have a higher metabolism then those who get less sleep. The second reason is that getting enough sleep has an affect on daily energy levels. Taking a walk or some other form of exercise during the early evening speeds up our metabolism and helps burn away extra calories. You don\’t have to do an all out workout, just something to get the blood pumping and your heart rate up.

3. Get Moving – Our sedentary lifestyle is one of the biggest metabolism busters we have to deal with. Look for way to incorporate more activity and movement into your day. Take a walk at lunch, use the stairs instead of riding the elevator, and don\’t park in the space closest to the building where you work or at the mall. It\’s the little things that will add up at the end of the day that count.

4. Protein – Eating protein stabilizes your insulin levels which can have a big affect on how your metabolism runs.

5. Diet Choices – The healthier your food choices the higher your metabolism will run. Your body needs nutritious high fiber foods to run at it highest level. The reason for this is simple; the body must spend more energy extracting all the nutrients from these foods which it needs to function properly.

6. Eat More Often – This doesn’t mean stuff your self all day long. If you eat 5 or 6 smaller meals during the day you will not only find you eat less but you\’ll have more energy as well, keeping you away from those sugary snacks. Skipping meals is a big no-no because this can actually cause your metabolism to slow down.

7. Lift Something Heavy – Building lean muscle mass is one of the best things for increased metabolism that you can do. Not only will you burn calories while working out but lean muscle mass also consumes large amounts of caloric energy after the workout.

I am on the weight watchers diet and I am doing ok i guess. I am following the diet exactly and I excercise. I only lose about 2 lbs per week. I am always hungry. When I get hungry I will eat a piece of fruit or drink water but that doesn’t last long. I am a little scared of taking diet pills but at this point i an willing to do anything. I bought some Hoodia over the counter on Monday and I’ve been taking it for the past couple of days. I haven’t felt as hungry, but that may be the psychological impact of just knowing I’m taking a diet pill. I just wondered if anyone has any comments or personal experiences with Hoodia? I know diet pills aren’t great for you, but has anyone heard if Hoodia is relatively safe? I’m not going to die from taking this, am I?

Hi I live in South Africa where the plant Hoodia comes from. It grows in our desert here and is used by the bushmen to suppress their appetitie when they are on long walks and if food is not readily available. It is totally natural and very effective in suppressing the appetite. It will definitely not harm you at all and is very safe. Good luck.

I am 31 years old. I have two kids and have gained excessive weight after both of them. I had a cessarian with the first and natural with the second. I’m pear shaped so it’s mostly in my hips and buttocks. I have a desk job so I sit a lot and I’m always too tired feeling to work out at night. I’ve been on every diet under the sun to only gain it all back. I’ve tried numerous excersises also. Over the counter weight loss pills or energy pills give me a racing heart. When I do loose weight I get the saggy belly that hangs between the legs when I sit and bend so how would I be able to find out how would be the best way to loose weight effectivly for myself and my body type and keep the sagging away. Please help.

ok, first….stay away from the ‘diet pills’ — they are ALL CRAP, EVERY ONE OF THEM.
they all say, ‘use with ANY sensible diet and exercise program’…and the reason for this is that it is the sensible diet and exercise programs that are responsible for the Weight loss, not the stupid pills.

as for sensible diet part — and i’m not being funny here (it’s what works) stop eating so much. most of us have 2 double whoppers with cheese, or super size our meals etc. Just stop eating as much — 2 hot dogs instead of four, 1 whopper instead of 2, reduce calories gradually but noticeable. After a week or so, start throwing in the baked potato or salad instead of fries etc.
Just start eating less and less, then start eating healthier. Find good healthy things you can eat a lot of. And don’t worry about the ‘fat pig’ comments or looks — don’t do it because of that, do it for your other reasons — your life — you’re only 31 and have to live long and healthy to take care of your kids.

Work in the exercise program in whatever form you can — walk more (stairs instead of elevators, park a little further away and work), take walks with kids, pets, start doing floor exercises, plays sports with kids etc. You don’t have to join a gym or do 5 hrs of fitness a day — just more than you are now.

GOOD LUCK — eat less, eat healthy, start exercising, and exercise more.
